Today, Steve Brown, Head of Constabulary Communications Network (CCN) here in Jamaica was our guest lecturer in class. I must say twas a very insightful lecture as we learnt in depth about how the organisation functions especially since he as using examples from his office o illustrate.
One thing that stuck in my mind and I had to blog about it before it slipped was the various communication systems used in organisation and it resonates with what Mr McDaniel spoke about. Three such were upwards-downwards, horizontal and the infamous grapevine.
The top-down systems deals with information flow in such a way that it is passed from the bottom up or the top down.
Horizontal is said to be th ebest as every one is one the same level and this creates an atmosphere that is more productive.
And finally – The grapevine on the other hand can be disastrous. While it may prove productive in getting information that others might not have have, it can cause discrepancies in how organisations are run.

I agree with you for the most part Mel but what is an organization without a grapevine? How else do we chat abt the person in the next cubicle and who she deh with and how she naa do her work and talk things abt her personal life that we know nothing abt?
